I'd like to refer you to an orthopaedic surgeon. They specialise in bone and joint problems. They'll assess whether you need further treatment.

Medicare covers part of the specialist fee. If the specialist bulk bills, there's no cost. Otherwise, you'll pay the gap between their fee and the Medicare rebate.

Usually you'll have an initial consultation, then possibly an MRI scan, and then a follow-up. The referral is valid for twelve months.

The specialist will order the MRI and send you to a radiology centre. Most MRI scans are partly covered by Medicare if you have a referral.
